LACMA’s new Wilshire bridge is architectural gaslighting
LACMA is finally finishing its 750 million dollar bridge across Wilshire Boulevard designed by Peter Zumthor. It is essentially an expensive roof for a bunch of cars sitting in gridlock. People are celebrating this as an architectural triumph but it is really just a flex that turns a major city artery into a tunnel for the permanent collection. I have worked in environments where the expensive stuff is just the cheap stuff with a better logo. This bridge is a luxury logo for a street that was already slow enough.
