Cunard Olivier Gala Is Floating Theater Purgatory
Cunard is turning the Queen Mary 2 into a floating West End stage for the Olivier Awards, and I can’t decide if it’s brilliant or a hostage situation. Imagine being five days into a transatlantic crossing with no land in sight, and suddenly you’re trapped in a Q&A about dramatic lighting with a guy in a tuxedo. I appreciate the aesthetic of a red carpet on the high seas, but the thought of a captive audience forced to endure experimental theater while fighting seasickness is the most delightfully pretentious thing I’ve heard all year. It’s high-culture at its most claustrophobic.
